Scott's Bass Lessons

Do you want to know what the main turning point of my progression as a bass player was?

The one thing that changed everything?

If you answered 'yes' to the question above then hit play on the video below!

One of the biggest frustrations I hear all the time is "Scott, where do I start... and what should I be doing 'exactly' to push my bass playing to the next level?"

And I totally get it. I have been through the exact same confusion and frustration you are going through right now. And one thing I'm sure you're aware of is 'confusion' and frustration' does not equal progress! In fact it can be devastating to any musicians development.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You think to yourself, "It seems like I haven't progressed in months if not years... and, I have no idea how to get out of this rut I'm in".

Should I practice scales, arpeggios? How can I apply these in a 'real music' situation? Will this be a complete waste of my time? Will I put months of hard work in and get nothing in return? Should I be learning full songs? Maybe this is as good as I'm ever going to get?!

ARRGGHHH... brain turns to soup!

If this sounds like you, you're in the right place.

I began my musical adventure as a bass player aged 18 And had no idea what I was doing!

Scott Devine

• I came from a regular working class background.

• My parents did not play me sophisticated and cultured music... we listened to Abba and Rod Stewart!

• I was even rejected from music school due to my lack of decent grades.

BUT, I'm stubborn as a mule!

So even though it would have been easier for me to give up and follow what most people were telling me to, I refused - point blank.

I dug in and made a declaration to figure out how to do this on my own NO MATTER WHAT! And, it was THE most important decision that I ever made.

In fact, looking back it was these rejections that ended up making me the bass player I am today. And in my opinion, is the exact cause of why I am one of the worlds most admired bass educators.

I wasn't force fed regurgitated information in academic institutions. I had to find out my own pathway in real life situations.

And, it was this that gave me my unique approach of teaching and my understanding of exactly 'how' people learn.

If I was asked "What's the one big thing that changed your approach to learning the bass?" It would be my discovery of what I call 'Micro Studying'.

So what the heck is 'Micro Studying'?

'Micro Studying' is when you break down larger study areas into smaller learnable steps. And by breaking things down like this, it accelerates your progression x10!

But what do I study?!

Well... that's the BIG secret I'm about to let you in on!

To really supercharge your bass playing like you never have before, you must study very specific chord sequences in a super focused way.

This is where my 'Play-Along Series' course comes in.

Scott's Bass Lessons

'The Play-Along Series' is a complete learning pathway made up of 5 modules. In each module I drill down into an essential chord sequence and turnaround, showing you how to study each one specifically and most importantly how to use them in 'real situations'. In each module we go through simple bass lines right through to soloing ideas and concepts.

I created the 'The Play-Along Series' for bassists who are serious about what works and doesn't work when playing, but haven't been quite able to see the simple clarity of how everything works together from the perspective of an advanced player.

And that's exactly what I've done in this course. You'll see exactly how studying these specific turnarounds and chord sequences using the techniques I show you will transform your skills as a bass player.

That's my goal for you.

I want you to be able to rip into these videos and then immediately start applying what I teach. The course not only includes over 4 hours of video, but I've also included literally hours of backing tracks in Samba, Bossa and Swing at various speeds. And I've made understanding the material as simple as it can possibly be.

By studying very specific chord sequences, your fretboard will literally start to unfold which in turn will give you the ability to provide the perfect low-end support for any musical situation.

12 Core Things you'll learn within this course

1 A fast-track method of interchanging between any key.

2 How to pick the right practice tempo so that you find yourself learning with ease (which leads to perfect timing on the stage as well as playing in a state of total relaxation).

3 How to really listen to the drums so that you can feel its most important elements and lock into them for the best possible performance.

4 How to instantly understand the "feel" of any song and flawlessly move between different moods and feels.

5 A secret technique for finding and using all of the fifths so that your playing is always dynamic and interesting.

6 How to incorporate 3rds and alternate between root-5th-root-3rd exercises for quick advancement.

7 How to hear drum accents to bring out the "triplet" feel that is essential to any walking bass line.

8 How to use tension notes and when to release them so that you sound like a pro.

9 Exactly how to start with soloing - you'll be amazed at just how far you can get with just a single scale using the II V I!

10 How to expertly "travel" the fretboard so that you always sound like you are playing within the chord progression - even when you are actually breaking the rules ...

11 How to isolate arpeggios and practice them all over the fretboard.

12 How to think while playing instead of just "wiggling" around (which never really impresses anyone).

And much, much more...

Here's a birds eye view of the whole course

Module 1 - The II V I

The II-V-I turnaround is one of the most commonly used chord progressions not only in jazz but also in rock, funk, pop and other genres of music. So, isolating this progression and practicing it in all keys is really a must!

In this module you get:

  • 1 x 40 minute video tutorial
  • 72 separate backing tracks
  • Each key has Bossa, Samba, Slow, Medium, Medium-up and Fast Swing styles and speeds.
  • Detailed worksheets with TAB and notation.

Module 2 - The I VI II V

The I-VI-II-V turnaround is almost as common as the II-V-I and is used extensively in jazz. In fact some jazz tunes such as 'Rhythm Changes' are constructed almost exclusively from the I-VI-II-V.

It can also be used at the end of almost every jazz standard that exists, therefore is one of the most important chord progressions there is, and is an essential practice topic.

In this module you get:

  • 1 x 45 minute video tutorial
  • 72 separate backing tracks
  • Each key has Bossa, Samba, Slow, Medium, Medium-up and Fast Swing styles and speeds.
  • Detailed worksheets with TAB and notation.

Module 3 - The minor II V I

The minor II-V-I turnaround is as common as the Major II-V-I but is often overlooked by student musicians and simply 'brushed under the carpet'.

The minor II-V-I must be isolated and practiced in it's own entity as it is constructed from completely different chords and scales than the Major II-V-I.

In this module you get:

  • 1 x 30 minute video tutorial
  • 72 separate backing tracks
  • Each key has Bossa, Samba, Slow, Medium, Medium-up and Fast Swing styles and speeds.
  • Detailed worksheets with TAB and notation.

Module 4 - The Jazz Blues

The stereo typical 'Jazz Blues' takes the simple 12 bar blues as its foundation and adds more chords and complex substitutions to it. Not only is the 'Jazz Blues' an amazing study for improvisation but it's also a 'must' for jam sessions!

If you are aiming to, or are already attending jazz jam sessions you must know the 'Jazz Blues'. There are countless jazz standards based on this form and therefore it is one of 'the' most important forms you can learn and study.

In this module you get:

  • 1 x 45 minute video tutorial
  • 72 separate backing tracks
  • Each key has Bossa, Samba, Slow, Medium, Medium-up and Fast Swing styles and speeds.
  • Detailed worksheets with TAB and notation.
